The clients decided to move from a large house in the southern area of São Paulo to a more compact apartment, better connected to the city’s urban life. Owners of boutique inns in Bahia, the couple is constantly on the move, traveling or working throughout Brazil.
The apartment was conceived as a kind of base, a headquarters for the couple when in São Paulo, rather than a place where they would spend most of their time.
We reorganized the layout by removing one of the original suites and incorporating previously unused areas into the primary bedroom. The kitchen was opened up, and a powder room was added. A large white slatted panel conceals the elevator shaft and integrates several custom storage units designed to organize clothing and various belongings which, given the significant difference in size between their former house and the apartment, initially had no designated place.
The spaces and their hierarchy were designed with the idea of a “headquarters” in mind: the kitchen functions as support, while the entire apartment, except for the bedroom, is dedicated to gathering and relaxation.
The living room featured a double-height ceiling that had previously been underutilized. We introduced a large bookshelf that wraps around the upper level of the space, accessed by a Santos Dumont staircase and a small wooden mezzanine that can function as a compact home office. The bookshelf serves to organize and display an extensive collection of objects the clients bring back from their many travels, forming a vibrant, living memory of their journeys and the heart of the apartment’s composition.
